THE CAUSE OF THE 1908 TUNGUSKA CATASTROPHE

   Following up on my two talks given at Moscow in June 2001, here is an
updated
presentation:
   A vast amount of literature endeavours to explain the 1908 forest
destruction
in the Siberian taiga by the impact of some huge meteorite, of stony or icy
oomposition, despite the fact that dozens of careful expeditions have
secured
less than one gram of debris.
When compared, e.g., with the 3000 times lighter Sikhote-Aline
iron meteorite (of 12 Feb. 1947)  -  of which 23 tons of debris were secured
(within 4 years), some 30% of the impacted mass  -  the discrepancy is a
factor
of 10^10.9, some hundred billions. Moreover, the chemistry of secured peat
and
soil cores was always found to be consistent with terrestrial outgassings.
   An old Russian movie claims to reconstruct the treefall pattern of
Tunguska
via a chemical explosion of a cable car, constructed to scale in the
laboratory.
The swindle here is the energy ratio: The simulated chemical explosion
liberates
much more energy than its gravitational infall energy, whereas the opposite
is
the case for an evaporating meteorite.
   Among the more than 20 facts which testify in favour of a gigantic
terrestri-
al gas outblow are the preferred geological location of the site, right
inside
the Kulikovskii crater, near the center of the Siberian craton, and the four
western Eurasian bright nights which started at the time of the impact,
during
the (Greenwich) night of 29/30 June. They require (icy) scatterers above the
thermosphere, at a height of more than 500 km, inconsistent with Bronshten's
(1991) settling cometary dust in the mesosphere.
